In the 1990s even the venerable Texas Instruments – with its loyal corporate culture of life-long TI-ers – found itself faced with selling off business units. TI retirees in those business units often went to sleep one night on the TI retirement program only to wake up the next morning to find themselves receiving retirement benefits from another company -- perhaps even one that had been a competitor.
TI retained Elettore/the Corporate Citizen Group to help it find a way to mitigate the ill will these changes were causing. It also asked us and to help them forge an esprit de corps among its former employees … many of whom had spent their entire careers at Texas Instruments.
TI’s employee culture was strong. The TI identity was critical to many life-long employees. It was bad enough to suddenly have a retirement program that fell short of the one they had with TI. In addition, that personal identity had been erased and many were none too happy.
Elettore (known then as The Corporate Citizen Group) assembled groups of affected and unaffected retirees to get them to discuss their sentiments about the changes. We then benchmarked retiree programs at other Fortune 500 companies nationwide and conducted surveys among employee retiree groups.
We also compiled data, facilitated additional forums where the issues and needs could be refined, and established a steering committee of “influencer retirees” from the various business units.
We identified multiple ways by which TI could continue to support TI-ers and maintain the TI retiree network. Working with the steering committee, we crafted the by-laws of, and launched, a non-profit organization called the TI Alumni Association. It is an organization that stands today, providing activities, programs, life-long education, and more.
